Since 1996 David Dike Fine Art has hosted the annual Texas Art Auction which has become a tradition in collecting Texas Art. The sale features turn of the century to mid-century Texas paintings, sculpture and works on paper.

David Dike strives to offer unique and important pieces of art to the auction market. The sale is a carefully curated collection that offers art to both the new and mature collector, which represents an important part of Texas art history. Whether it is a beautiful impressionist landscape of the Texas hill country, a strong mid-century modern abstract that represents Texas place in the American Modern art movement, or a 1930’s work on paper representing the life of the time, the sale seeks to have something for everybody.

Fall Texas Art Auction - November 9, 2019

The Texas Art Auction

The David Dike Fine Art, Texas Art Auction took place on November 9, 2019 once again at Wildman Art Framing, Louis Murad was the auctioneer. There were over 350 people who attended auction, which started at 12, noon and the lively event lasted until 5:00 PM. The sale featured 297 lots of early to mid-century modern Texas art. 84.5% of the lots successfully sold at the auction. The overall sold price for all of the lots was $1,894,800 (including the buyer’s premium). Some of the highlights of the sale include the top selling lot 128, the Michael G. Owen painting featuring the artist himself and the great American folk musician, Huddie “Lead Belly” Leadbetter which sold for $228,000.

Other auction records to date include lot 64 the “Portrait of Governor James Pickney Henderson” by Solomon Salomon (Am. 1869-1937) which sold for $16,800. There were two paintings by Texas modernist, Robert Preusser (Am. 1919-1992) in the sale; the painting titled, “Mayan Antiquity” executed in 1954 sold for $60,000, an auction record for the artist.  The early Texas abstract expressionist, Ben Culwell had two paintings in the sale as well, and lot 132, Untitled work, number 56-II which he executed between 1958 – 1977 sold for $30,000 an auction record for Culwell. The “Red Buds in Spring”, by early Texas landscape artist, Ella K. Mewhinney, lot 115 was an auction record for the artist, selling for $22,800.

The Texas Art Auction

The David Dike Fine Art, Spring Texas Art Auction was a festive and successful fine art auction, which took place on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Wildman Art Framing. The crowd was filled with interested and dedicated Texas Art enthusiasts. Several first-time buyers were present and active at the sale as well.

The auction sold 88% of the 255 available lots. The top selling lot in the sale was the Julian Onderdonk painting titled Road Through the Trees painted in 1913-1914, which sold for $384,000. The second highest selling work in the sale was lot 127, by Porfirio Salinas titled Cactus in the Hill Country, which sold for $120,000, a new auction record for the artist. Prior to this, the previous the previous record auction sale for Salinas was at the David Dike Fine Art, Texas Art Auction in October 2018; a bluebonnet painting titled Texas Hill Country Spring which sold for $90,000. Another top selling lot in the sale was lot 124, the Florence McClung titled, Dallas executed in 1930, it sold for $72,000. A Florence McClung of similar subject matter, however a much larger work and tighter regional style sold in our October 2018 sale for an auction record-breaking $252,000. A jewel of the sale was lot 146 by Dallas’ own Reveau Bassett titled Ducks in Flight which sold for $39,600.

This spring auction featured the collection of Dallas landscape architect and Texas fine art collector, John Stone, 96% of the lots in his collection sold. These exquisite paintings of which Stone was a steward of for decades have found new eager homes. Please visit our website for information on upcoming shows and auctions.

Fall Texas Art Auction - October 27, 2018

David Dike Fine Art presents the now semiannual Texas Art Auction. The Spring sale features 249 lots of early to contemporary Texas Art. Jone Stone, a Dallas art collector for the past 40 years, offers 60 painting from his collection.

Assembled with passion and adored for many decades, the collection of John Stone is inspired by nature and his appreciation and love for Texas art, both contemporary and rooted in the tradition of the early Texas landscape oil painting. The Spring auction features paintings from Dallas’ own Otis Dozier, Olin Travis, Edward Eisenlohr and Merritt Mauzey. Texas Modernism is represented by collections of Seymour Fogel and Zanne Hochberg among many others. Louis Murad of Murad Auctioneers will conduct the sale. (Louis Murad TXS 13362)

The sale will take place once again at Wildman Art Framing on Saturday, April 6, 2019. The bidding will start promptly at 12, noon, the doors will open at 10:00 AM.
